Job interview tips by dietitian Emma Lightowler

Looking for your first band 5 post can be scary but it comes around very quickly, especially once you start your placements! I’ve written some of my top tips for preparing for interviews which will hopefully give you a starting point of what to think about when doing your prep.

1) Start applying when you feel ready, not when everybody else does. People move through placement at different paces so just because someone else has applied, it doesn’t mean you need to do it straight away

2) Do some research on the Trust you are applying to. Have a look at their visions and values and have a think about how your personality and experiences can relate to these

3) USE EXAMPLES! Have a think about experiences you have had on placement and what skills these show

4) Think about what skills you can bring to the department… really sell yourself to demonstrate how you will fit into the department and why you are the best person for the job

5) Use the people around you on placement to help. Ask if they have any tips on interviewing or some may be willing to help you with a mock interview. Uni’s are often good in helping with this, particularly if you contact the Careers and Employability department

6) Write down your questions after you come out of your interview! They’re very handy to look back over and to help you think about what key skills they were asking for

7) Ask for feedback from your interviews- this will help you to see what you missed as well as give you confidence for the questions you answered well

8) You could contact the department if you feel that you need to, to get more information about the Trust and/or how they work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions- you need to know that the job is right for you

9) Relax! It’s natural to be nervous but try not to get stressed and worked up before the interview. It’s easier said than done but it will help you paint the best picture of yourself

10) Don’t worry if you don’t get the job- there are lots of jobs out there for dietitians and the right one will come along eventually
